How do I recognize that my WordPress website has been hacked?
There are various warning signs that can indicate a hack:
- Your website suddenly displays foreign content, spam links, or dubious advertising.
- Visitors are redirected to other, often spammy, websites.
- Google warns about your site with “This site may have been hacked” or displays a red warning.
- You can no longer log into your WordPress dashboard or find unknown user accounts there.
- Your website is extremely slow or constantly crashes.
- Your hosting provider has blocked your site, or you receive warnings about high traffic.
- Your webspace is suddenly full of unknown files.

How could my website even be hacked? I thought WordPress was secure!
WordPress itself is inherently secure – but only if you maintain it properly! The most common entry points for hackers are:
- Outdated software – old WordPress versions, themes, or plugins with known security vulnerabilities are like open doors for attackers.
- Weak passwords – “admin” or “123456” can be cracked in seconds.
- Nulled themes and plugins – free pirated copies of premium products often contain hidden malware.
- Insecure hosting environment – if other websites on the same server are hacked, you can be affected too.
- Lack of security measures – no firewall, no SSL certificate, no backups.

What should I do immediately if I notice that my website has been hacked?
Stay calm and act systematically!
- Step 1: Change all passwords immediately – WordPress admin, FTP and database.
- Step 2: Put your website into maintenance mode or take it offline to prevent further damage.
- Step 3: Contact me so I can remove malware and backdoors from your website.
- Step 4: Scan your own computer for viruses – sometimes login credentials are stolen from your PC.
- Step 5: If possible, create a backup of the current state – yes, even if the site has been hacked – for forensic analysis.

Can I clean my hacked website myself, or do I need an expert?
It depends on your technical skills and the severity of the hack. For a simple hack (e.g., just a few spam links), technically savvy users can take matters into their own hands: scan plugins, use WordFence or Sucuri, delete infected files, change passwords, and update WordPress and its plugins.
A serious hack (hidden backdoors, manipulated core files, compromised database) is more complicated – laypeople often overlook hidden malware, and the hack can be reversed. An expert knows all the hiding places, performs a thorough clean-up, and strengthens your site against future attacks.
Rule of thumb: If you feel insecure, your website is business-critical, or Google is already displaying a warning, seek professional help. While this will cost money, it will often save you days of frustration and further damage.
How long does it take to clean up a hacked WordPress website?
A thorough, professional clean-up typically takes 2–4 hours and includes: a full malware scan, manual review of all files, database cleaning, backdoor removal, clean file restoration, security hardening, and final testing.
In particularly severe cases (e.g., if the hack went undetected for months), it can take up to a day to find all the hidden backdoors.

Updates, updates, updates – keep WordPress, themes, and all plugins up to date.
Strong passwords – at least 12 characters, with uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters; use a password manager.
Security plugin – install WordFence for firewall, malware scans, and login protection.
Regular backups – at least weekly, ideally automated and also on external storage.
SSL certificate – ensures an encrypted connection (https://).
Delete unused content – old themes, deactivated plugins, and inactive user accounts are security risks.
Two-factor authentication – additional protection when logging in.
Good hosting – a reputable host with its own security measures is invaluable!

What happens to my Google ranking if my website is hacked?
A hack can severely damage your Google ranking—and fast! If Google detects that your site is distributing malware, containing spam, or redirecting visitors to dubious websites, it will be removed from its index or flagged with warnings. Visitors will then see the infamous red warning, “This website could harm your computer”—and naturally, they won’t click. Your visitor numbers will plummet, your revenue will drop, and your reputation will suffer.
The good news: If you act quickly, remove the malware, and notify Google via Search Console, the warning can be lifted within a few days. Your ranking will usually recover.

My add-on domain websites were hacked in mid-September, and I spent several frustrating weeks trying to get help from my hosting company. I also tried fixing the sites on my own, and probably did more damage than good. I was not comfortable when my hosting company kept steering me to one particular security firm. I later learned that the host company had a half interest in that security company. After days of online chats and emails with a number of other outfits that specialize in cleaning and protecting sites from malware, I came across Bruce Jackson. Bruce is in Austria and I live on the East Coast of the U.S., but he gave me the sense that I could trust him. My sites had major malware infections; in addition, they had out-of-date CMS programs and other structural deficiencies. (My bad, for letting things deteriorate.)
